What types of speech will I be doing?

There are many different categories to choose from. We will be placing you in one category that will be determined by your interest, ability, and experience. You will stay in that category for the whole year. Categories are:

Great Speeches
Humorous

How is a speech prepared?

Weekly coachings with Mrs. C. Hoffmann or Mrs. Garms will guide the students to success. A student may choose to have the same time every week or to sign up weekly. The time slots will be twenty minutes long. One day a week will be strongly recommended for all students during December to choose and cut scripts, research and outline public speaking topics, or write creative speeches. This will enable us to begin tournaments in February.

What is a Speech tournament like?

Most speech meets take place on Saturdays. There are usually three preliminary rounds at a tournament, which means the student will present the speech three different scheduled times. The student is scheduled to speak with five to eight other people. The judge will also listen to the student. The judge will award a ranking and a score. The three judges results will be tabulated and the top six to eight people will compete in a final round to determine top award winners. The public is invited to attend invitational meets.

What are the expectations of Cedar Mountain Speech?

Each student will be coached weekly during January, February, and March. These students will have attended the necessary workshops in December. ANYONE WHO DOES NOT COMPETE IN TWO TOURNAMENTS WILL NOT BE ENTERED IN SUBSECTIONS. Everyone is expected to earn enough success to feel comfortable competing at the sub-section tournament in March. We've always concentrated on individual success rather than viewing ourselves competitively. However, we are a successful team which has had speakers at the state level and our goal is to bring more to state competition this year.

Cedar Mountain Speech Team is a team of excellence. Each member strives for individual success. All students were beginning speakers at one time. We welcome speakers at all levels of success. Thank you for considering us.
